Update Syllabus

Same Game, Different Rules

For the remainder of the semester we will stick with the assigned reading, but rather than having things due Monday/Weds/Friday, you’ll be expected to read, take quizzes, and respond to facilitation questions anytime by Thursday at midnight of the week they are assigned. This should provide everyone the flexibility we all need in these weird times. The exception here is facilitation questions, which must be posted anytime Monday.

Office Hours: Just email me (tedelfin@cpp.edu) or text me (510.219.5554) if you want to talk and we’ll make a plan. Please be sure to tell me your name and which class you’re in.

Your Questions, Answered. I hope.

Where will we meet?
Quizzes will still be on Blackboard, but our virtual meeting space is this blog.

When will we meet? (Synchronous or asynchronous?)
Asynchronous. You’ll get to drop into this class when it suits you, more or less. We will not be on a M/W/F 9am schedule. Instead, the rest of the semester will be structured on a week-by-week basis, with a few exceptions. See below.

How will facilitation work?
You will still facilitate on the reading you signed up for, but now you will share your questions as a blog post. Please include the name of the article and your own name in the title.
Example: Travesti Ch. 3 – T DelfĂn
Facilitators, please post your questions anytime on Monday to give everyone a chance to respond. Those who are not facilitating will be expected to “participate” by jumping into the post of their choice and engaging in the comments section by Thursday at midnight. On Friday facilitators will be expected to complete the loop with a closing post that pulls together the responses to the facilitation questions.
Example: “I hadn’t thought about the social construction of childhood before, but now I see that judging travestis according to our own ideas of childhood is ethnocentric. Etc.”
If it is not your facilitation week you should plan to respond at least once for each text. If you are facilitating you don’t need to comment on that reading. Remember that each week we will be discussing 2 texts.

What if I missed my in-class facilitation day?
You may sign up for another opportunity to facilitate online.

Will we still have Friday Forum?
No more Friday forum. I think we’ll be juggling enough online discussions as it is. If you love making memes, though, you are welcome to reply in meme to the facilitation questions.

What does this mean for our final exam?
As soon as CPP administrators let me know the guidelines for online finals I will update you.

What about the classes we “paused” to transition to online instruction?
Reading, quizzes, and facilitation will still take place, but you’ll have all of week 8 to complete assignments.

The calendar below looks weird.
Yeah, well. Yeah. I rebuilt it week by week and recalibrated it with our first week being week zero (I accidentally made it “week 1” on the original syllabus. To allow more flexibility, quizzes will be open for the rest of the semester. The only hard deadlines are facilitation questions (post on Monday), responses (post by Thursday at midnight), and facilitation wrap-up (post Friday).

  1. I'm sorry, I've never used this site before and I can't seem to find some functions. I don't know how to make a post, so I guess I'll put my questions here.

Will there be facilitation for "A Homegirl Goes Home" this week?
Will we be doing "Do Muslim Women Really Need Saving?" this week?

Also, this is just my personal opinion, but wouldn't the way we'll be using this be the same if we were just using the Discussion Board on Blackboard? Because instead of Friday Forum we can have a folder for the week and in the folder two threads, one for each reading, and in the thread the first post will be the facilitation questions and following that the responses. It just seems like this blog might be a bit of an extra step when everything can just be in one place (and I'm not sure if it's just my complete lack of technological skills, but this blog seems a little confusing to me).

  2. I am feeling the same way. I'm confused on how to get to the other blogs and I'm wondering if it may be easier to do it all on balackboard too.
